Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has stated that his retirement from office does not mean he has withdrawn from Kenya’s political landscape, emphasizing that he remains actively engaged in national affairs and political decision-making discussions.
Speaking on Saturday, Uhuru clarified that although he stepped down from the presidency, he continues to hold firm to his political beliefs and remains committed to influencing the country’s direction through support for leaders he believes can promote unity and stability.
“I may no longer hold office, but I have not retired from my political beliefs or my commitment to the country,” he said, adding that he continues to support leadership that prioritizes national cohesion.
The former head of state reaffirmed his support for opposition leader Raila Odinga, describing him as a leader capable of fostering unity among Kenyans.
He noted that his backing of Raila during the 2022 General Election was based on the belief that the opposition leader was best positioned to strengthen national cohesion.
Uhuru further indicated that if Raila Odinga seeks his involvement in future political engagements, he would be willing to participate, stressing that supporting a chosen leader is a legitimate democratic right.
His remarks come at a politically sensitive time as Kenya gradually shifts focus toward the 2027 General Election, with parties and coalitions actively positioning themselves for future contests.
Analysts say Uhuru’s continued political presence is likely to influence emerging alliances and strategic calculations within both government and opposition circles.
Political observers also suggest that the comments may draw attention from allies of President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, particularly given the complex political dynamics that have evolved since the 2022 elections.
Reactions to Uhuru’s statement have been mixed. Some Kenyans have praised his willingness to remain engaged in national discourse, arguing that former presidents still have valuable experience to contribute.
Others, however, believe that retired heads of state should adopt a more neutral or advisory role to avoid influencing partisan politics.
Despite differing opinions, Uhuru’s continued association with Raila Odinga underscores a long-standing political relationship that continues to shape opposition dynamics and broader national political conversations.
Online platforms have since been flooded with commentary, with many Kenyans debating the implications of his remarks and what they could mean for future political alignments in the country.
